Miramar: epicenter of San Juan’s modern history, art and culture
Miramar’s history can be traced back to the 19th century when the capital city of San Juan saw an increase in population. This gave way to petitions to build outside the city walls—Old San Juan—and thus became one the most attractive areas in the zone. It is bisected by Avenues Ponce de Leon and Fernandez Juncos, between the Condado Lagoon and the Bay of San Juan.
This community of Miramar constituted what the National Registry of Historic Places defines as a “contiguous urban district where the architectural resources of residential, commercial, institutional and religious character act as edified documents of the community’s historical development”. Miramar also gave way to homes that date back to the 20s, designed by important architects of the time and that are still in use.
Aside from being an urban area, Miramar is home to many spaces and institutions such as San Juan’s Central Park, the Pedro Rosselló Convention Center, the Lawyer’s Association, Department of Justice, the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, Casa Aboy, Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish and Academy. It also boasts a great variety of restaurants, hotels, and cinemas.
